The Gerstle River Bridge (number 0520) was built in 1944 as part of America’s World
War II effort, linking Alaska to the Lower 48 contiguous United States via Canada.
Governor Walter J. Hickel signed a bill in 1993 dedicating the bridge as the Black
Veterans Recognition Bridge.
Alaska’s Gerstle River bridge consists of nine, steel, 200 ft. long Warren through trusses,
spanning the braided river at 1,820 feet in length.
